Thinking about becoming a Scout? We strongly encourage you to! The best years of Scouting are ahead of you!
One of your biggest decisions in the next few months will be deciding which troop to join. A Scout troop will offer you opportunities for fun and learning, but it is important that you join a troop which has goals and activities that match your goals and interests. We encourage you and your friends to visit several troops to learn what a boy scout troop does and how it does it. Even though troops attempt to achieve the same goals through the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) program, boy scout troops are not all the same.
During the next few months, please plan a visit to Troop 4, meet our scouts and adults, and discover if we will provide you with the opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors and help you become an outstanding and respected young man. We encourage you to join our Troop if our program matches your goals and interests and if you are willing to make a commitment to work towards earning the Eagle Scout rank while living the Scout Oath and Law.
We place a strong emphasis on the “Patrol Method”, which has been a very successful aspect of the BSA program. A Patrol typically consists of six to eight scouts who work together as a functional unit. In the “Patrol Method”, boys learn not only individual scouting skills necessary for rank advancement, but also leadership and interpersonal skills that will help them throughout their lives. We are a full scout uniform Troop.
You are welcome to visit any of our regular Troop Meetings on Monday nights. Please arrive at 6:45 pm if possible to allow greeting time before the meeting starts.
We meet at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Mondays at 7:00 pm (typically every Monday Columbia Public Schools are in session). We encourage scouts and adults to arrive between 6:45 to 6:50 pm so our meetings can start promptly at 7:00 pm. Meetings will usually dismiss between 8:15 to 8:30 pm. We meet in the Fellowship Hall and lobby area on the upper level of the church. Please arrive to the meetings in your Class A uniform (which includes CLOSED TOE shoes).
We camp one weekend each month for the months of September thru June. Campouts are either one or two nights. We provide each patrol with a dining fly, propane cook stove and lantern, cookware, and serving utensils. Most campouts cost around $10-$20. Campouts involving skiing, climbing, canoeing or other special activity are more expensive.
All parents and guardians are expected to participate in some way, making for a better Troop and better experiences for the scouts and adults. There are many opportunities to get involved with the Troop, either by direct interaction with scouts or in “behind-the-scenes” positions.
We attend a 10-day summer camp each year at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation near Osceola, Missouri. Cost for Summer camp varies, but is typically around $400 per person. Need based camperships are available.
We participate in 1 - 3 hour duration service projects approximately five to six times per year to reinforce service to others. We also support our Eagle Scout candidates on their eagle project workdays.
We participate in the Great Rivers Council Fall Popcorn Sale. Approximately 1/6th of a boy’s individual sales total is placed in his scout account as credit for use on campouts and/or Summer Camp.
